Jazz at John's
About
Jazz at Johns is the strand of the St John's College Music Society dedicated to jazz and improvised music.
We run a programme of concerts and workshops through the term, bringing professional musicians into College to perform and to teach. Details of all upcoming events are below.
The workshops are open to all, whatever your instrument or experience, and are a chance to explore creative music-making as well as develop existing skills. They range from exploring jazz standards to broader improvisation, including classical//baroque techniques, folk and free improvisation so come along and discover a world of creative music-making!
One to one lessons can also booked with artist in residence Shirley Smart, where you can discuss individual goals and receive support and material to help you develop your skills.
Details of dates for the workshops are below and information about booking one-to one lessons will be available shortly.
Artist in Residence: Shirley Smart
Our Artist in Residence is cellist Shirley Smart, one of the most distinctive voices working across jazz and improvised music today. Known for a style that draws together jazz, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean traditions, after having spent 10 yeas living in Jerusalem, she performs internationally as a bandleader and collaborator.
She is a Professor of Musicianship and Improvisation at the Royal College of Music, and also teaches at Trinity Laban.
Across the year she leads workshops, plays with students, and shapes the direction of Jazz at Johns.
More information about Shirley can be found here.
