Music at St. John's
St John's College Open Orchestra (SJCOO)
We encourage you to come along to our 'Come and Play day' in Fresher's Week, for the opportunity to find out more about what we do!
The St John's College Open Orchestra is aimed at those who may feel a little intimidated by the high quality and huge quantity of classical music in Cambridge, and would prefer to play in a more fun, relaxed and low-commitment group. There is no audition to join, we only require you to turn up with your instrument, and an enthusiasm to play!
SJCOO membership is open to all students, both at St. John's and other colleges, who play an orchestral instrument to around grade 4/5 standard or above. If you have played with either of the CUMS orchestras or with several college orchestras we respectfully ask that you do not apply; SJCOO is aimed at those who have not had these experiences.
We are always happy to have more musicians who want to meet for casual rehearsals, and sight read through some fun numbers. SJCOO is a low commitment orchestra (4 rehearsals a term, fortnightly on a Monday evening), involving relaxed and fun rehearsal where we play through classical, film and other kinds of music.
Our Michaelmas Term rehearsal dates are: 16th Oct (Come and Play Day), 30th Oct, 13th Nov, 27th Nov.
